Diamond Café to introduce reusable containers, mugs
Sodexo will introduce a reusable container system in the Diamond Café beginning on Earth Day in an attempt to limit the amount of plastic foam waste, according to a spokesperson. For a combined one-time fee of $5, customers will be able to purchase a plastic food container ($3) and a plastic mug ($2).
When first purchased, a customer will receive a container and mug, get their meal, eat, then return the meal container to the cashier who will then give a token in return. At their next visit, the customer will present the token to receive a fresh, clean container.
Customers can also take their container with them to clean themselves.
Diamond Café employees will not clean the reusable mugs. Customers will keep the mugs at all times and be allowed unlimited drink refills while eating.
Justin Roberson, a representative of Sodexo at UALR who is heading up the new program, said that he expects the containers, which are made of thick plastic, to last a while.
In an effort to promote the new program, Roberson said that 50 of the container and mug sets will be given away beginning at 10 a.m. during Earth Day celebrations in the Donaghey Student Center on Thursday, April 19.
Roberson said that the goal of the program is to reduce waste at an affordable cost. He said that he hopes to get at least 1,000 students to participate in the program.
The containers and mugs are dishwasher safe and microwavable.
