Trojans sweep the mile and 5,000m at Invitational

After a month and a half break in competition, the UALR indoor track team competed in its second meet of the season, snagging five first-place finishes at the Arkansas State University Invitational in Jonesboro on Jan. 25.

The Trojans swept the mile run, claiming the fastest times among all men and women. Hanson won first place in the men’s race with a time of 4:19.80. Freshman Emma Dahl finished first in the women’s race with a time of 5:10.79.

The Trojans also swept the 5,000m run, claiming the fastest time in the men’s and women’s race. Hanson won the 5,000m run with a time of 15:08.17. Junior Shaun Koehn finished third in the men’s 5,000m run with a time of 15:28.44. Senior Marissa DeLaPaz finished faster than any female competitor in the 5,000m run, with a time of 18:43.71. The Trojans claimed another third-place finish in the 5,000m run thanks to sophomore Tori Copeland, who finished at the 19:31.02 mark. Copeland edged out teammate Mackenzie Bloom, a senior, by 17 one-hundredths of a second (19:31.19) for the third-place finish.

The fifth and final win of the day for the Trojans came from freshman Rickard Gunnarsson in the men’s 800m run. Gunnarsson finished with a time of 1:53.16. Teammate and fellow freshman Alex Ebmeyer finished in second place with a time of 1:56.39.

In the field events, senior Jason Belt secured a spot in the finals and finished third in the men’s weight throw, claiming a distance of 17.53m.

In the men’s triple jump, senior Taron Dunn secured a spot in the finals and claiming the second-longest distance of the day at 14.49m.

The UALR indoor track and field team will compete in the Valentine Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Murfreesboro, Tenn. It will be the final meet before heading to the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Jonesboro on Feb. 24-25.
