Lady Trojans get come-from-behind win
The Lady Trojans came back from a first-half deficit to beat Middle Tennessee, 51-43, Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Jack Stephens Center.
UALR is now on a seven-game winning streak with a 10-6 record in the Sun Belt Conference and 18-7 on the season.
“The thing that I was thankful for was that they didn’t get off to a great start,” said UALR Head Coach Joe Foley. “They were making points but then they were killing us right off the bat. It kind of let us have a chance to ease back in and then have to jump and try to score twenty [points].”
UALR guard Taylor Ford, who led UALR with a game-high 16 points, said, “we were a little tense. Once we started moving around and calming down, stuff started happening for us.”
The Lady Blue Raiders led 16-4 early in the first half before the Lady Trojans went on a 9-2 run on the 3:53 mark.
Hannah Fohne scored on a lay up to cut the deficit to three points (20-17) then MTSU’s Lauren March scored two points to put her team up by five before halftime.
Middle Tennessee’s hot start was enough to stay in front of UALR going into halftime, as they lead 22-17.
Foley talked about the adjustment in the second half. “We were looking for something, wasn’t quite sure how to do. Then we know at halftime, they did more adjusting and we came out and played in the second half.”
Middle Tennessee began the second half with a five-point lead, but UALR came out of the gates quickly and went on an 8-0 run to take a 28-25 lead.
With the Lady Blue Raiders leading 38-37, Carolee Dillard made a jumper that put UALR ahead by one point. The Lady Trojans took a 43-38 lead and Clark scored on a jump shot with over a minute left in the game to put the lead at seven.
With 39 seconds remaining in the second half, MTSU’s Ebony Rowe, who came into the game averaging over 21 points a game, made two points to trim UALR’s lead to three (45-42). Rowe was held under her average after finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Raiders.
Ford dribbled to the other end for a lay up that put the Lady Trojans in a six-point lead (49-43). As the game came to an end, Shanity James sealed the victory with two free throws that put the game away for UALR.
The Lady Trojans were 12-for-17 (70.6 percent) from the free throw line and forced Middle Tennessee to commit 18 turnovers. The team also had 31 team rebounds, 20 of them coming from the defensive end.
Clark finished with 10 points and six rebounds in the win for UALR. Ford also had six rebounds and four assists to go along with her 16 points.
UALR will be on the road to Miami, Florida at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, to square up against Florida International.
