Junior DeVonte Smith rises for the throwdown.

The UALR men and women basketball teams kicked off their seasons with Meet the Trojans Nov. 4 at the Jack Stephens Center.  In an event hosted by Rex Nelson, the head coaches of both teams spoke about their upcoming season.  Seniors from each team had a chance to address the crowd and answer a few questions from Nelson.  The UALR Dance Team was also on hand for a performance.
The players participated in a dunk contest and 3-point contest.  The atmosphere was loose and impromptu, but the coaches for both teams talked about the importance of filling up the arena on their opening days.  Both teams begin their seasons with games at home at the Jack Stephens Center. Coach Joe Foley spoke about the toughness of the women’s non-conference schedule this season; citing games against LSU and Louisiana Tech as examples.
Coach Shields took the moment to announce that the team had just voted seniors Will Neighbour and Leroy Isler as captains.  He also talked about the NCAA emphasis on the elimination of hand-checking that may result in a possible increase in scoring and in free throws.
After the friendly competition, the players were available to sign autographs. The women open on Sunday Nov. 10, with the men to follow the next day Nov. 11.
