"The Three Pianists" consists of professors Naoki Hakutani of UALR, Lei Cai of OBU, and Heekyung Juhn of HSU.

The Arkansas piano trio known as “The Three Pianists” will perform several world-renown pieces Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle-Smith Concert Hall.

“‘The Three Pianists’ is a group of three piano professors from Arkansas, who have been performing together at various concert halls for over four years,” Naoki Hakutani said in an email. Hakutani is an assistant professor of piano at UALR.

The trio consists of Hakutani, Lei Cai of Ouachita Baptist University, and Heekyung Juhn of Henderson State University. They are scheduled to perform at all three campuses, and Piano Professor Jaeyeon Park of Chosun University in South Korea will join them.

“Each professor has a busy performing schedule [but] enjoys coming together to promote works for piano ensemble that are not often performed,” Hakutani said.

“The Three Pianists” will perform several pieces with which students may be well-acquainted.

These include “The Egmont Overture” by Beethoven and “Ride of the Valkyries” from the opera “Die Walkure” by Richard Wagner. Hakutani said “The Egmont Overture” is a work that is similar in style to Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony” and “Die Walkure” is one of four large scale operas. The piano trio will also present pieces by Franz Liszt (Hungarian), Manuel de Falla (Spanish) and Peter Schickele (American).

“I know that many students are looking for opportunities to hear and see new things, so this might be one of these opportunities,” Hakutani said. “Because there are eight hands playing at one time, it’s actually a concert where it may be visually interesting.”

The recital is free and open to the public. Call (501) 569-3294 for information.
