The UALR baseball team started the season on a positive note by defeating Creighton on opening weekend at Gary Hogan Field.

Game one of the series was on Valentine’s Day, but no love was shown between the two teams. These players had one thing on their mind: victory.

Travis McDonald took to the mound as the starting pitcher for the Trojans. McDonald impressively lead the Trojans five innings before Creighton tied up the game during the top of the fifth, making the score 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, a single was hit which allowed a run to be scored. The score became 2-1 Trojans. Pitchers Jesse Harbin and Tanner Rockwell didn’t let Creighton score for three innings. There was excitement during the bottom of the eighth inning when the Trojans scored three runs to make the score 5-1. At the end of the game, UALR took game one of the series, 5-1.

UALR was firing on all cylinders in game two of the series on Saturday- a game in which the offense and defense played a big role in picking up the win against Creighton.

The Trojans scored three runs in the first and second innings, making the score 6-0. UALR scored a run in the fifth inning, which made the score 7-0. During the sixth inning, Ethan Schlechte threw a pitch that put Creighton on the scoreboard. After a homerun was hit, the score became 7-4. After that, the Trojan relief pitchers kept Creighton scoreless during the rest of the game. The Trojans won 7-4, now leading the series 2-0.

The final game of the three-game series came on Sunday, where the Trojans beat Creighton 7-1. Justin Steelmon hit a single that drove in two runs during the first inning, making the score 2-0. In the third inning, Mitchell Scheuler hit a homerun and that put the Trojans ahead with a 6-0 lead. The only run scored by Creighton came during the second inning. To make the score 7-1, the Trojans scored again in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher, Cameron Allen, gave an impressive performance, only surrendering three hits, while striking out six batters in a seven-inning period. At the end of the game, the Trojans got a 7-1 win.
