UALR track team ready to take it outside
The UALR Trojan track and field team ended the indoor season at the SBC championships on Monday Feb. 24, where they finished in eighth place.
Great efforts by individuals such as Emma Dahl, Cherry Nolan and senior Rebekah Grissom helped close out the season for the Trojans. Grissom, who sits second all time for shot put with a distance of 13.95 meters, was only 1 ¼ away from all-time leader Jen Doherty (1996). Her score was also seven inches better than her previous best.
Sophomore Emma Dahl took seventh place in the 5K. She scored a perosnal best 17:22.81 in the event but was seven seconds from placing her sixth. Dahl also placed sixth in the 3k and ran the distance medley relay team to a third place finish with her 1600-meter leg.
Junior Cheryl Nolan placed 1th overall in the mile run, the first event of the day. She just missed scoring by 9 seconds with a time of 5:11.59, which also just missed a top 10 performance in school’s history.
The team now looks to transfer their focus to the outdoor season which begins Saturday, March 15 at the Rhodes College Open in Memphis, Tenn.
Last year the team competed in the outdoor championships in Miami, Fla., where the men’s team finished 10th while the women placed 11th.
Rebekah Grissom broke the school’s javelin throw record with a throw of 136′-3′ (41.52 meters) to finish fourth and place her name in the record books. Nathan Carr scored eight points alone with a time of 1:51.78 in the 800m race.
Basil Rogers, now a sophomore, finished 27th in the preliminaries with the ninth-fastest 200m outdoor time of 22.18 in school history and helped the 4×100 relay team finish eighth for a point with a time of 42.03.
The Trojans by numbers are improving and can expect to score even better this outdoor season. They have plenty of talent from seniors and returing freshman. Their level of veteran experience will help bring out the best in the team overall.
This year’s SBC Championship will be in San Marcos, Texas on Friday, May 9.
