Senior Edina Begic finished with a game-high 27 kills to pace UALR to a 3-1 win over Texas-Arlington Friday night at the Jack Stephen Center.

She also had 11 digs to go along with her 27 kills.

The Trojans won the first two sets (25-22, 25-23), lost in the third set (26-24), but closed off the last set on a 25-16 win.

“I thought UTA did an excellent job with defense,”said Volleyball Head Coach Van Compton. “It was hard to put tips, pushes, hits down. So they kept the ball coming back over the net.”

The Trojans were down by no more than five points in the first set before it went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 21. Adisa Hodzic scored off of an assist from Megan Mathis to put UALR ahead by one point. With UALR in a two-point lead (24-22), Begic got a service ace and ended the first match with the Trojans winning 25-22.

The Lady Mavericks gave the Trojan volleyball team a tough challenge through all four sets but the Trojans will always find a way to tie the game and take the lead.

Coach Compton said that tonight’s crowd helped out on the Trojan’s win tonight against the Lady Mavericks. “We had a better atmosphere tonight. The cheerleaders were here, the dancers were here, had a great crowd, a great announcer, it’s more like a real atmosphere. The crowd definitely helped.”

After losing in the third set, the Trojans started out big with a 15-6 after a kill from Begic. UTA cut the margin within eight points (24-16) after a kill from UTA’s Taylor Gross. UALR ended the last match after Edina Selimovic, who had eight kills in the will, made her last kill to seal the victory.

Compton stated that the team needs to work on just staying focused for the whole match.” When we play focused, we play a lot better and then we execute,” she said. “If we’re not focused, we were not going execute very well.”

Junior Outside Hitter Sonja Milanovic finished the game with 18 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Setter Megan Mathis had a game-high 53 assists and Senior Defensive Specialist Capri Rino got a team-high 19 digs in the win. Texas-Arlington was led by Qiana Canete’s 17 kills and 18 digs.

The UALR Volleyball remains undefeated in Sun Belt Conference play, which ties them for first place with Texas State, with a 5-0 record and 11-4 on the season. The team will travel to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern on Sun., Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
