The Struggle is Real: Changing your major

Have you ever decided on a major and after a semester or two you found yourself unhappy with your choice? Studies show that college students change their major at least three times throughout their college career. That is a lot to consider when deciding on changing your major.

Students have a variety of choices when it comes to choosing a major, which can be difficult when finding the right one. Usually the most important factor for students is the level of income, when deciding on what they would like to do.

Students usually decide what they would like to do with their lives during high school based upon their interests. Their interest might come easy at first but in college it can become more of a challenge. Once a career path is chosen; a major is then decided.

For some, a new interest might be discovered in college; which could cause a student to change majors. It is challenging to start fresh with a new major in college, especially after discovering something you didn’t know about the major before going in to it. And it can cause conflict with your graduation date.

A disadvantage of wanting to change majors is the time that has already been invested within that area. One might find themselves stuck in a hard place if they are unhappy with their major, but have completed several classes needed for that major.

Changing majors can be tough, but it is not impossible. There are student resources on the campus website that can provide help for someone deciding on a major or wanting to change majors. Ultimately, it is always best to talk to your adviser about any problems you are having with your major.
