Shelly Washburn

Nursing, 2008

"Finding time to study was really hard. I worked while I was going to school. Fortunately, where I worked I could study sometimes behind the desk. But there were nights when I got two or three hours of sleep and I was grateful for those nights. It’s a sacrifice, but it’s gonna be worth it to get my degree."

Shelly Washburn, a native of Cabot, attended some classes with her daughter. Having earned her RN, she is now working on a bachelor's degree in nursing and wants one day to share her childhood experience of being a heart patient with parents and young patients.

How Do I Apply?

Even a one-year break in the educational experience can cause feelings of doubt and uncertainty about your abilities. So, if you’ve never attended college, it is understandable that you may be apprehensive. That’s why we’re here: To help show you that it is possible for you to return to school and achieve your goals.

Family and job responsibilities can seem overwhelming, and sometimes adding classroom requirements can create a great deal of stress. The decision to attend college isn’t one to be taken lightly, and adult students often have special needs and concerns.

To make this transition easier, UALR’s Adult Student Advocacy Program (ASAP) can help you get started in the admissions and enrollment process. Entering college as an adult student doesn’t have to be a challenge!
