Biology department Professor Dr. Janet Lanza conducts research with monarch butterflies that she and her students raise themselves. Her group finds that the butterflies may not be the smartest animals, but they are beautiful. Amino acids in plant nectars contribute to their reproduction, the research has discovered.

Faculty and students in the Earth Sciences department conduct field research in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, and throughout the United States. Students take a three-week field course focused on the geology of the Rocky Mountains and environs in Colorado and New Mexico and have the opportunity to present research at professional geology conferences.

Junior Damone Dickerson transferred credits from both Pulaski Technical College and Southern Arkansas University when he came to UALR to complete a degree in biology with a pre-medicine emphasis. The North Little Rock native is a sports nut who loves to play basketball, football, tennis, volleyball, kickball, and dodgeball as well as fishing and swimming.
