Flu Information Center

Message from the Director of Health Services

9/18/09

Dear UALR Community:

There is a special concern this year about the novel H1N1 influenza pandemic that is circulating worldwide.  The emergence of this virus (formerly known as the “swine flu”) is actually a combination of avian, swine, and human influenza A viruses.  This is a unique pandemic because this particular type of influenza A has never been on the planet before, thus the reason it is called “novel.”  Because it is a new species of virus, it is highly contagious.  However, in most cases, persons who become ill with novel H1N1 will have a mild to moderate illness and will recover without needing medical care, much like the regular flu.  Therefore, this is not the time to panic.  What is important is to be informed.

The UALR planning Committee for the H1N1 pandemic has been meeting regularly since April, 2009 to address this public health concern as it relates to the UALR community. UALR officials are working in concert with local, state, and federal agencies to aid in the prevention, detection, and management of the flu.

We hope our new Flu Information Center will help you stay informed and prepared.

Best wishes for a healthy fall semester!
