Why Walk?

What’s so important about walking? 
No other exercise yields so many health dividends for such a small investment. The 20-year Nurses’ Health Study of 72,000 female nurses reveals that consistent 30 minutes-a-day walking is associated with a 30 to 40 percent lowered risk of heart disease in women.

A recent Harvard study of more than 11,000 men reveals that brisk walking for an hour a day for five days per week can cut the risk for stroke by 50 percent.

Walking increases fitness level, builds joints and bones while increasing endurance and muscle strength.

Walking also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, breast cancer, and Type II diabetes.

According to the latest information from the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine joint guidelines on physical activity, all healthy adults ages 18 through 65 should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days a week. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.
