The Interpreter Education Program (IEP) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) invites applications for a grant-funded, non-tenure track, full-time position (req. #559) with primary responsibilities as project director beginning August 15, 2008. The IEP directs two U.S. Dept. of Education grants, one from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) for 2005-2009 pre-service interpreter preparation and one from the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) for 2005-2010 in-service interpreter education/training. The IEP offers a Bachelor of Arts and an Associate of Arts in Interpretation: ASL/English, a minor in educational interpreting for majors, a Sign Language Studies minor for non-majors, and ASL satisfies the UALR second language requirement. The IEP is housed in the Dept. of Counseling, Adult and Rehabilitation Education (CARE) within the College of Education. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as the Project Director for the RSA Mid-America Regional Interpreter Education Center (MARIE) (2008-2010), a collaborative partnership with the University of Northern Colorado to: participate in the Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) to identify effective practices in interpreter preparation; participate in Project Directors’ meetings to develop and oversee strategic planning and work team direction; provide service and training opportunities to interpreters in an eleven state region and participate in university meetings and committees as required. Travel will be expected.
ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: This position provides opportunities to work in a team environment, to conduct research, and to be involved in the development of inter-state and national partnerships to identify effective practices in interpretation. There are also opportunities to collaborate with leaders in the field of interpreter distance education to develop and deliver innovative educational events to both interpreters and interpreter educators via distance and onsite training and to collaborate with IEP faculty in program development and teaching. Little Rock provides residents with a vibrant Deaf Community, the Arkansas School for the Deaf, the Research and Training Center for Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and other programs and agencies serving persons who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing.
QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate preferred; masters degree in interpretation or deafness-related area required; Required: certification from RID (NIC, CI and CT, CSC or CDI) and/or NAD V (other credentials will be evaluated on an individual basis); grant management and budgeting experience; strong organizational and management skills including the ability to multitask to maintain the overall grant objectives while managing the daily details; experience conducting business via distance technology (teleconferencing, videophone, email); travel; strong interpersonal skills for interaction via verbal, nonverbal, written and sign language, including individuals with disabilities, from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds; ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, journal and technical procedures; excellent written English skills to write and disseminate regional newsletters, reports and business correspondence; ability to work effectively with a dynamic team of professionals.
