Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 is a federal law that protects the privacy and security of health information.  Privacy is the right of an individual to keep his/her medical information from being disclosed.  Security is how we protect PHI from accidental or intentional disclosure, alteration, destruction or loss.
The University of Arkansas System Notice of Privacy Practices describes how the UA health and dental plans may collect, use and disclose your protected health information (PHI), and your rights concerning your PHI.
For questions or to report HIPAA violations, contact the university HIPAA Privacy Officer in the Department of Human Resources at 501-916-3180.
