The Master of Science in Information Science is designed for post-baccalaureate students, including working professionals, who are interested in helping organizations harness the power of data by moving into advanced data solution and analyst developer and leadership roles. This advanced degree explores new innovations in information retrieval, storage, processing and analysis tools, and techniques.
The graduate certificate in data science can be earned as part of the M.S. Many students then use the M.S. as a stepping stone to pursuing the Ph.D. in computer and information science.
The 33-credit hour master’s degree can be completed in class, fully online, or with a mix of in-person and online courses. Lectures are webcast live and also recorded for students to view later. Most courses are scheduled one time per week. Learn more about Distance Learning and Proctoring.
Learning Outcomes
- Graduates will be able to design database schemas, as well as create and maintain databases.
- Graduates will be able to process large data sets, including both manipulation and mining operations.
- Graduates will be able to explain and implement data manipulation processes that provide appropriate guarantees of privacy of personal data.
- Graduates will be able to use tools and techniques for visualization to summarize large data in ways that enhance comprehension and analysis.
- Graduates are proficient in written and oral communication.
- Graduates are able to maintain their technological currency through lifelong learning in the field.
