International Services

Health Insurance

All international students who study at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock are required to have year-round health and accident insurance throughout the duration of their studies. Insurance coverage must be maintained during the summer months as well, even if traveling out-of-the-country or returning to the student’s home country. Premiums for insurance coverage are assessed twice a year on a 6-month basis: ½ is assessed at the beginning of Fall semester and ½ is assessed at the beginning of Spring semester. Each international student’s account on BOSS is automatically charged for health and accident insurance. Please be aware that insurance premiums cannot be added to the deferred payment plan offered by UALR and must be paid in full Fall and Spring semesters.

UALR requires that all international students purchase the International Student Health Insurance offered through the Office of International Services (OIS). OIS requires students to purchase the health insurance that is offered by UALR in order to ensure that injuries incurred during their time of study in the U.S. will be covered and proper medical treatment can be received.

International Student Health Insurance is currently offered through the Lewer Agency based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Great West is the parent company that identifies in-network physicians that students can go to if medical services are needed and Great West processes insurance claims for payment.

Insurance Waivers

Waivers will be approved only on a very limited basis: (1) the student presents proof that he or she is sponsored by their embassy and the embassy provides insurance coverage on the student’s behalf; or, (2) the student is covered by health insurance provided through employment or his or her spouse/family employment at a U.S. company. The student must present proof of his or her coverage to OIS. Insurance purchased in the student’s home country will NOT be approved for a waiver.

A request for a waiver must be submitted in writing to OIS prior to the first day of class.
