Spring Break 2014

The UALR International Business Program is making plans for a trip to San Jose,Costa Rica for Spring Break 2014.  The group will leave on Saturday, March 22 and return on Saturday, March 29.  New information about the trip will be posted at this site, so check back regularly.

The trip is a required component of the Field Study in International Business class (IBUS 4316/5316) at UALR. MBA students may participate in the Field Study by registering for IBUS 5316, which will count as an elective toward the MBA program. Students will be required to register for the course, pay appropriate tuition for the course,  pay travel costs ($2915) that will cover all meals, hotels, airfare, and ground transportation.  You must pay a deposit of $500 by December 15th for the trip (just registering for the course does not guarantee your spot).

Program Description

This is a seven day Green Business Study Program in March 2014 based in two different locations: San Jose and Tamarindo,  as well as weekend excursions. Every year we have a special theme around which we plan the lectures and visits. For 2014, UALR will look at the different perspectives of green business practices: multinational operations, Costa Rican companies, local community and indigenous entrepreneurs.  The 2014 lecturers and visits will include those that have integrated sustainability practices into their operations.

Visits and lecturers can change according to availability and the following itinerary is tentative.

Program Itinerary

  • Saturday March 22 – (PM) Arrival at San Jose, Costa Rica.
  • Sunday March 23 – The Rain Forest of Braulio Carrillo National Park, White Water rafting and Chocolate Tour at Sarapiqui – transfer to Earth University.
  • Monday March 24-  Earth University and Assukkar sugar cane plantation at Turrialba.
  • Tuesday, March 25 – Morning: CINDE; Procomer Afternoon: Rain Forest Alliance; community organization lecture and keynote speaker: Dr. Randal Arauz, PRETOMA.
  • Wednesday, March 26 -  Visit to two industrial plants to be determined – Departure towards Tamarindo.    
  • Thursday, March 27 – Full day at the beach.
  • Friday, March 28 – Free day. Optional Activities: Canopy tour, tubing, thermal waters and mud and horseback riding.
  • Saturday, March 29 – Departure from the hotel to Liberia Airport; flight to be determined.

COSTS, CONDITIONS, AND SCHEDULE OF PAYMENTS

A. Student Rate:

Total per student:  Regular tuition and fees for the course at UALR,  and $2915 fee payable to UALR. Fee will cover the following:

  • Airfare to and from Costa Rica
  • Transfers:  airport – hotel – airport.
  • 3 nights at Hotel Tryp Sabana in double/triple occupancy with buffet breakfasts and taxes.
  • 1 night at the Earth University Facilities with breakfast, dinner, lunch, and tours described.
  • 3 nights at Barcelo Langosta 5 Star All Inclusive Resort. Accommodation triple or double.
  • All breakfasts and lunches, and four dinners are included.
  • Day excursion to Sarapiqui: including white water rafting, chocolate tour, lunch transportation, and guide.
  • Site visits and lectures (The lecturers could change depending on the speakers availability).
  • Transportation with specialized guide.
  • Local Insurance.

NOTE: Every student must bring their own medical insurance and a student identification card for discounts in travel and cultural activities. Not included in the student rate is the exit airport tax of $28 per student that has to be paid at the airport.  The cost per student is based on a group of 12 students. In case of fewer students, the costs would have to be reviewed

B. Schedule of Payments:

  1. Students will be required to register for the course (IBUS 4316 or IBUS 5316) and pay appropriate tuition for the course.
  2. Students must pay a deposit of $500 by December 15th to reserve a spot for  the trip (just registering for the course does not guarantee your spot).
  3. Students must pay the remaining balance of $2,415 by January 15th.

To reserve your spot in this class:

  1. Register for IBUS 4316 or IBUS 5316
  2. Email Dr. Funk so that you can be added to the list (mffunk@ualr.edu)
  3. You will need to pay your deposit by December 15th. The check should be made out to UALR and can be submitted to Dr. Funk.
  4. You will receive an email from Dr. Funk on December 15th or before letting you know that the class has “made” (meaning that we have the required minimum enrollment).
