Outreach Activities Regarding Infants Lost to Follow-Up Hearing Testing: A Study of Selected Arkansas Counties

Arkansas birthing hospitals are required by State law to test all newborn babies for hearing loss, as part of the nationwide Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) program.  However, a number of the newborns who test positive for hearing loss do not undergo further diagnostic testing, thereby compromising the benefits of early detection.

In this study, the UALR Institute of Government examines the infant hearing testing protocols of a group of birthing hospitals throughout the state, seeking to identify problems and make recommendations to help reduce the number of infants lost to follow-up testing.
