This Spring the Young Alumni Committee of the Alumni Board created a new campaign to engage graduates from 2008 through 2012 – the “Benjamins for Bowen” Initiative. These graduates have received invitations to give back to the law school by donating $100 a year – or $8.33 a month.

The U.S. News and World Report uses alumni giving when ranking law schools. Average giving is 12 percent; however, Bowen would like to beat that by having an average of 15 percent giving from graduates.

Each class has representatives who are tasked with reaching out to their fellow classmates to encourage donations. Those representatives are:

2008 – Cory Childs, Matthew Glover and Jackie Harris

2009 – Ava Franks, Adam Fogleman and Carla Johnson

2010 – Sergio Ceja and Keith Pike

2011 – Kenya Gordon, Daniel Osborne and Allison Slinkard

2012 – Mona Wedad and Matthew Stauffer

To give, make a pledge online or contact Wanda Hoover.

Please join us from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 20 as we honor Interim Dean Paula Casey as she retires from the law school.

Dean Casey has taught at the law school since 1979 and is the longest serving faculty member. She has taught Evidence, Trial Practice, and Criminal Procedure.

From 1990 until 1992, while on a leave of absence from the school, she was Chief Counsel and Legislative Director for U.S. Senator Dale Bumpers. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed her as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. She left that office in 2001 to return to the law school.

July 1, Dean Casey will become the Interim Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School for UALR.

A reception will be held in the second floor Student Lounge with the portrait unveiling at 5:45 p.m. All alumni, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to let Dean Casey know how much we appreciate her service to Bowen and our state.

We’re happy to announce that Dean Casey and her husband Gil Glover are endowing a trial competition scholarship to mark this milestone in her career and to support students who represent Bowen in trial competitions. As you know, Dean Casey has spent the majority of her career at Bowen teaching legal skills and serving as the trial team coach.

If you would like to honor Dean Casey in her retirement, please consider a contribution to the Paula J. Casey Endowed Trial Competition Scholarship. Please contact Wanda Hoover for additional information.

To RSVP for the reception email Amy Jackson or call 501.324.9967.

Bowen School of Law will host the 2013 American Society of Comparative Law annual meeting.

The event will be held Oct. 10-12, 2013, in Little Rock.

The American Society of Comparative Law (ASCL) is the leading organization in the United States promoting the comparative study of law. Founded in 1951, the Society publishes The American Journal of Comparative Law, the outstanding American publication of scholarship on comparative law.

Call for papers

The Younger Comparativists Committee of the American Society of Comparative Law invites submissions to fill a panel on “New Voices in Comparative Law,” to be held at the Society’s 2013 Annual Meeting. The panel will highlight the scholarship of new and younger comparativists.

Submissions will be accepted on any subject of public or private comparative law from scholars who have been engaged as law teachers for 10 years or fewer as of July 1.

The Scholarship Advisory Group of the Younger Comparativists Committee will review submissions with the authors’ identities concealed. A maximum of two submissions will be chosen for the panel. Submissions will not be accepted from scholars whose work has been featured in a prior younger scholars’ panel at the Society’s Annual Meeting.

The scholars whose entries are selected for the panel will be required to submit a final paper no longer than 30,000 words by Aug. 22.

To submit an entry, scholars should email an abstract of no more than 1,000 words (including footnotes) no later than noon EST on June 24, to Judy Yi. Abstracts should reflect original research that will not yet have been published by the time of the Society’s Annual Meeting. The abstract should be accompanied by a separate cover sheet indicating the author’s name, title of the paper, institutional affiliation, and contact information. The abstract itself must not contain any references that identify the author or the author’s institutional affiliation.

The Younger Comparativists Committee is pleased to announce that LexisNexis will award a Book Prize to the author of the paper judged most meritorious by the Scholarship Advisory Group.

Please direct all inquiries to Richard Albert, chair of the Younger Comparativists Committee, by email at 617.552.3930.
