Spring 2013 General Scholarships

This is a list of the general scholarships available to Bowen students for the 2013-2014 academic year. To apply for these awards, applicants need fill out Part A- General Scholarship Application and submit their General Scholarship Essay.

NOTE: The award amounts are estimated based on prior years.  The amounts are subject to change based on interest accrual, university income, donor input, etc.

General Application Scholarships

The Arkansas Bar Scholarship in Honor of the Sebastian County Bar, Mike Gorman, U.M. Rose & E.L. Wright

  • Amount: $128
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

Austin McCaskill Scholarship

  • Amount: $400
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

 Bernard & Bud Whetstone Scholarship

  • Amount: $177
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

The Bowen Law Alumni Association Scholarship

Bowen graduates automatically become a member of the Bowen Law Alumni Association.  This scholarship is funded by alumni gifts and through sponsorships of the annual Bowen Law Alumni Scholarship Luncheon.

Brian MacMillan Scholarship

  • Amount: $225
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student

Colonel C.E. Ransick Scholarship

  • Amount: $250
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

C.R. Warner Scholarship

  • Amount: $105
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

The Dean John Hugh Carmichael Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Judge John Huge Carmichael. Judge Carmichael served as Dean of the Arkansas Law School in Little Rock (now the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law) from 1898 to 1950.

  • Amount: $600
  • Who is eligible? Any second or third-year Bowen student, however students in the C+ range are specifically targeted.

Edward Lester Scholarship

  • Amount: $100
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

Friday, Eldredge & Clark Scholarship

  • Amount: $380
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

Governor Carl E. Bailey Scholarship

This scholarship was created to honor the leadership and public service of Arkansas’s 31st Governor, Carl E. Bailey.  Governor Bailey served for two terms during the 1930s, leading the state through the Great Depression.  Prior to his role of governor, Bailey served as Prosecuting Attorney for Pulaski and Pope counties and as Arkansas’s Attorney General.

Governor Sid McMath Scholarship

Sidney Sanders McMath was a decorated U.S. Marine, attorney and the 34th Governor of Arkansas who championed rural electrification, massive highway and school construction, the building of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and broad expansion of opportunity for black citizens in the decade following World War II.  This scholarship was established in honor of Governor McMath’s service to the state of Arkansas.

Guy A. Moore Memorial Scholarship

The late Bowen Law School Professor James W. Spears created the Guy A. Moore Scholarship to honor his late uncle who raised him. Mr. Moore was an attorney, a long time circuit clerk, and owned an abstract company in Jasper, AR.

  • Amount: $1,700 (More than one scholarship may be awarded)

Gwen Dewees Hodge Memorial Book Award

Bowen alumnus, Ms. Gwendolyn Dewees Hodge (’92) passed away in September 2010.  Ms. Hodge served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas for 15 years.  This book award was created to honor Ms. Hodge’s dedicated commitment to community service and outstanding leadership in the legal community.

  • Amount: $300
  • Who is eligible? Applicants must be a part-time Bowen student in good standing. Preference is given to students who wish to pursue a career in public service and who exhibit attributes possessed by Ms. Hodge, including character, leadership and a commitment to community service.

Harry P. Warner Scholarship

  • Amount: $105
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student

Jack Morton Wilhelm Endowed Scholarship

Mr. Alfred D. Wilhelm, Sr., placed a high value on education and wished to make educational opportunities available to as many people as possible.  Mr. Wilhelm established the Jack Morton Wilhelm Scholarship at the Bowen Law School in honor of his son, Jack.  Jack Wilhelm (’78) is an attorney in Austin, TX focusing on the areas of civil and business litigation, mediation, and taxation.

Jewel Minnis Scholarship

The Minnis Trust, created in 1964 as a bequest by Jewel Minnis of Roe, AR.  Ms. Minnis inherited her parent’s wealth earned from the Trotter & Minnis General Store in Roe. She was also a successful farmer and teacher whom, upon her death, bequeathed 800 acres of farmland in Monroe County, AR to the University of Arkansas.  To date, this trust has paid over $2 million to the University.

John T. Haley Endowed Scholarship

The estate of the late Anne C. Haley of Warren, Arkansas, established a scholarship in the name of her husband, John Thomas Haley.  Mr. Haley was a senior member of the Haley, Claycomb, Roper & Anderson, PLLC law firm in Warren and was an active member of the Arkansas Bar Association before his death in 2008.

Judge Pat Mehaffy Endowed Scholarship

Judge Pat Mehaffy was a distinguished public servant for the State of Arkansas. Prior to his death in 1981, Judge Mehaffy served as the Prosecuting Attorney for the Sixth Judicial District of Arkansas and was a founder of the Mehaffy, Smith and Williams (now Friday, Eldredge, & Clark LLP) law firm.  He served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was elected Chief Judge in 1973.  This scholarship was established in Judge Mehaffy’s memory by his many friends and legal associates.

  • Amount: $705

Judge William R. Overton Scholarship

  • Amount: $608
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student

Justice George Rose Smith Scholarship

  • Amount: $420
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student
  • This scholarship is awarded based on financial need and merit considerations using information provided in the General Scholarship Application.

The Nancy Hall Bailey Endowed Scholarship

Bowen alumnus, Ms. Nancy Hall Bailey (’90) was the definition of a Renaissance woman. Prior to starting her law school career at age sixty-six, Nancy worked as a television weather girl, high school teacher, banker, wife and mother.  Ms. Bailey’s Bowen classmates established this memorial scholarship to benefit non-traditional students and perpetuate the legacy of an inspiring woman.

  • Amount: $1,100 (More than one scholarship may be awarded)
  • Who is eligible? Applicants should be a non-traditional student at the Bowen School of Law. For purposes of scholarship selection, a non-traditional student is a person who has been out of formal schooling for a period of five years or more and who has life experiences that are different from the traditional student.

R.A. Eilbott, Jr. Scholarship

  • Amount: $167

Rather, Beyer & Harper Scholarship

  • Amount: $620
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student

R. Julian Glover Scholarship

Mr. Robert Julian Glover served as the Prosecuting Attorney for Garland County, AR. After his death in 1982, his wife, Ms. Loretta Glover, established this scholarship in his memory.

  • Amount: $1,400 (More than one scholarship may be awarded)
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student

Rose Law Firm Scholarship

  • Amount: $415
  • Who is eligible? Any Bowen student, however preference will be given to Law Review members.
