Second Floor Changes: A Work in Progress

During spring semester, the library sponsored a “Write on the Wall” event to solicit student ideas on how to improve the second floor group study area.  The library posed the challenge to students, “This Wall is Coming Down. What’s Next?  You Tell Us.”

Students responded with a wide range of comments, some serious and others more in fun.  In all, 85 suggestions were made and a few repeated themes emerged.  The greatest number of comments recommended the following:

  • More outlets
  • Smart boards/white boards
  • Modern technology furniture
  • Comfy furniture
  • Food/vending machines.

These are all good ideas and the library will be working to incorporate them in the renovation of the area prior to fall semester. Contractors have already begun working on the floor.  This summer they will remove a wall to expand the student space, open two restrooms for public use, and install new carpet.  Once the new carpet is in place, the library will add more outlets, moveable whiteboards, five Agati Media Technology group workstations with flat panel screens, some new seating, and vending machines.

Future plans include purchasing additional modern, comfortable furniture as money becomes available.  The goal is to transform the second floor into a student learning space that will enhance learning and research opportunities.
