Lee Johnson, a life-long Little Rock resident, graduated from Little Rock University in 1967, with an accounting degree. He is a Certified Public Accountant (retired) and was engaged both in public practice and as the CFO of a large wholesale beer distributor. In 1994 he started a small business, Grapevine Wines & Spirits. After studying successful retail shops, he incorporated upscale features such as no smoking, carpeted floors, classical background music, and a generally clean, uncluttered look not common to liquor stores. In 2000 he stepped back from active participation in the business. Since then he has been active in the UALR Alumni Association, serving for six years, the last two as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. He is also a board member of the UALR History Institute.
