In January, Ottenheimer Library’s catalog was updated to provide a cleaner and more streamlined interface.

Available on the Library website via the “Books and More” link, the library catalog contains bibliographic records for all books, journals and media items that the library owns, as well as records for electronic resources available through the library subscriptions.

The new WebPAC PRO interface from Innovative Interfaces retains the existing functionality while providing a more modern, easier to navigate interface. The new catalog also contains additional features, such as book cover images, summaries and table of contents.

In the January issue of FDLP Desktop, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has recognized Ottenheimer Library and the Library’s Government Documents Librarian, Karen Russ, for “their excellence in promotion, education, and service to the public.”

The GPO states “UALR’s Ottenheimer Library, excels in promotion of U.S. Government information resources and in networking with other libraries. The library makes vital connections with students, the public, and staff at other libraries that promote depository usage and help explain the value of the library’s participation in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and its depository resources. This ultimately enhances access and services within Ottenheimer Library as well as in the state and beyond.”

As a participant in the Federal Depository Library Program, Ottenheimer Library serves as an official depository for United States federal government publications, collecting approximately 37% of the materials produced by the Government Printing Office. Created by Congress in 1813, the FDLP provides an information distribution system of government publications to over 1,250 libraries located in the 50 states and the territories of the United States. Depository libraries support the public’s right to government information by collecting, organizing, preserving and providing assistance in the use of this information. Materials received by depository libraries from the GPO remain the property of the U.S. Government. Depository libraries are custodians of these resources, providing access, maintenance and service. Serving as a depository library is just one of the ways that Ottenheimer Library supports the information needs of UALR students, faculty and staff as well as residents of Central Arkansas.

For more information, see the FDLP article or the Library’s government documents page.

The unit allows library patrons to scan their UALR ID cards and then scan the barcodes of the library materials they wish to check out. The self-check machine records the circulation, desensitizes the item and prints a date due slip.

The new self-check machine is the second unit available to library patrons, as the Library installed an initial self-check kiosk in August 2010 near the elevators. The new self-check unit is a desktop model that has greater visibility on the circulation desk and is closer to circulation staff members so they can provide better assistance to patrons in the circulation of their materials.

Currently, the two self-check machines are limited to check-out and renewal of items. Soon patrons will also be able to check-in their materials. In all activities, circulation staff members are close by to assist as needed.

On the 4th floor, in addition to a large number of study tables, there are a limited number of study rooms that are available on a first-come basis. Students on the 4th floor are asked to silence their phones and other portable electronic devices and to refrain from talking or engaging in activities that generate noise that might disturb others. Library staff will be available to assist with noise complaints.
