Immerse Yourself in Culture

The arts learning community gives students curious about the world around them the freedom to explore. In this community, learning extends far beyond the classroom — students help professors organize events both artistic and intellectual, soak in the rich culture of Little Rock and other cities, and share it all with an entire floor of new-found friends.

Field trips aren’t for bystanders — our learning community students could get to:

• See a play at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre and get a backstage tour to meet the actors.
• Hear a concert and witness the collaboration of professional musicians.
• Visit the Arkansas Arts Center and see how the curators plan an exhibition.
• Take a behind-the-scenes look at artifacts and archives at the Clinton Presidential Library, the Center for Arkansas Studies, or the Historic Arkansas Museum, and experience the real “stuff” of the historian’s detective work.

Courses

History of Civilization I: HIST 1311-08, TR 12:15-1:30, Laura Smoller

The history of the world’s significant civilizations from their beginnings to approximately AD 1600: the development of integrated political, social, economic, religious, intellectual, and artistic traditions and institutions within each of those cultures; significant intercultural exchanges. Three credit hours.

Introduction to Music: MUHL 2305-07, TR 1:40-2:15, Rolf Groesbeck

Introduction to the creative process and history of music, vocabulary and descriptive terms used in the musical arts, and how to write about them. Attendance at arts events is required. Students will learn through writing, reading, discussing, listening, and participating in critical thinking and problem-solving activities. Three credit hours.

Introduction to Theatre/Dance: THEA 2305-07, TR 9:25-10:40, Yslan Hicks

An exploration of the components of the creative process as related to the making of theatre and dance. The purpose of this study is to develop in students an understanding of the theatrical experience. Attendance at arts events is required. Three credit hours.

Introduction to Visual Art: ARHA 2305-04, MWF 10:00-10:50, Jane Brown

Introduction to the creative process and history of art, vocabulary and descriptive terms used in the visual arts, and how to write about them. Attendance at arts events is required. Students will learn through writing, reading, discussing, listening, and participating in critical thinking and problem-solving activities. Three credit hours.
