Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

Degree requirements

The MALS degree includes 15-hours within a primary discipline, 9-hours of a secondary discipline and, a 12-hour liberal studies segment.  21 of these 36 hours must be on the 7000 or 8000 level.  The degree culminates in a thesis or final project.

The 15 primary discipline hours must come from within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS).  Current options include:

  • Anthropology
  • Art History
  • English
  • History
  • International and Second Language Studies
  • Music
  • Rhetoric and Writing
  • Studio Art

Note: Other departments may also be able to offer 15 hours, such as Philosophy, Political Science, and Psychology. You are encouraged to check with the department(s) that you are interested in for details on graduate-level course offerings.  Or you may contact us.

The 9 secondary discipline hours may come from the disciplines listed above.  Additional options include:

Disciplines within CAHSS:

Disciplines outside of CAHSS:

  • Communication
  • Conflict Mediation
  • Criminal Justice

Note: Other non-CAHSS disciplines may also be available.

The required 12-hour liberal studies segment includes:

  • 6 hours of liberal studies courses (LIST 7310 & LIST 7390)
  • 6 hours of thesis or final project work

The final project work will be decided upon consultation with the MALS coordinator and your thesis/project coordinator.
