BALLET HISPANICO is widely recognized as one of the nation’s most far-reaching Latino cultural institutions. Dedicated to exploring, preserving, and expanding the passion and joyous theatricality of Latino dance, BALLET HISPANICO presents an evening of repertory work that fuses ballet, modern and Latin dance forms into a spirited representation of contemporary Latino culture. Repertory includes the music of the legendary Tito Puente plus the intoxicating rhythms of the Conga, Rumba, Mambo and Cha Cha in Club Havana.

The Perez Family (Cuban-American film)

In an attempt to secure a sponsor, an unlikely group of Cuban refugees become a “family” as the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service gives families priority over others. In the process, a political prisoner who hasn’t seen his wife for twenty years and a disaffected sugarcane cutter fall in love. An excitable brother and a lovestruck cop contribute to the general confusion. The inevitable humorous romantic entaglements ensue as a final confrontation is set up.

Based on a true story, student activist and Mexican-American Paula Crisostomo realizes the disparity in treatment of Hispanic students and stages a peaceful walkout in five East Los Angeles high schools in 1968. Along with the help of her teacher Sal Castro, Crisostomo brought the injustice of the public school system to the forefront during the heart of the Civil Rights movement of the 60s.

Problems arise when the old man’s daughters come to visit their father and the soldier quickly falls in love with each of them

Las Guitarras de Espana has consistently performed to sold-out venues in Chicago and the Midwest. The ensemble has also performed at numerous schools, concert series, and performing arts venues. Members of the ensemble have roots from Brazil, Peru, Italy, Cuba, Mexico, and Portugal and they have traveled to, and performed or studied in, over 30 countries. In the fall of 2005, the ensemble, in collaboration with Clinard Dance Theatre, presented “Unraveling Rhythms” to audiences in the Midwest. The collaboration produced 17 successful performances which were highlighted by sold out shows, guest artists from India, and international praise of the work. The ensemble has released four CDs to critical acclaim worldwide.
