UALR Ramadan Iftar
Think Fast! Ramadan Interfaith Fast, Iftar, and Food Drive August 2011
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the fifth annual UALR Middle Eastern Studies interfaith gathering to share a fast breaking meal during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. For an entire lunar month each year, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from all food and drink during daylight hours. Each evening of Ramadan, Muslims break their fast at sunset with a special meal known as iftar. During Ramadan, extra effort is also made to keep thoughts and actions pure, and good deeds and giving to charity are especially encouraged.
The UALR iftar event is also a food drive, in the spirit of Ramadan we collect food to feed local Arkansas needy people. We asked for non-Muslim volunteers to fast for just one day along with Little Rock’s Muslim community to find out what it is like and to encourage donations to the food drive. Fasters asked friends and family to donate non-perishable food items in honor of their sacrifice.
