Three Profs Find Turkey Modern, Progressive

Three UALR professors joined a 16-person expedition to Turkey this summer, a trip sponsored by the Institute of Interfaith Dialog aiming to facilitate international understanding.

Professor Sonny Rhodes of the School of Mass Communication joined political science Professors Art English and Trent Shaskan and came back with impressions of a modern, progressive country rich in history.

“It’s an incredible melting pot of cultures,” Rhodes said. “I think I learned more about the history of this part of the world in 10 days than I did in all my years leading up to the trip.”

The UALR travelers were particularly impressed with Turkey’s energy efficiencies Americans would be wise to adopt. Guests in hotels had to place key cards in special receptacles to turn on the room’s power.

“The card had to stay in the receptacle or the power would go off again – no lights, TVs or radios carelessly left on,” Rhodes said.
