U.S. Department of Energy Lauds Profs

UALR’s Dr. Jeffrey S. Gaffney and Dr. Nancy Marley both received awards of appreciation from the U.S. Department of Energy this month – Gaffney for his “27 years of invaluable service as acting chief scientist and lead scientist of the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Science Program” and Marley “for cutting edge scientific research (that) has contributed to the advancement of understanding atmospheric chemistry.”

Gaffney, chair of the Department of Chemistry, is the Energy Department’s chief scientist for the Global Change Education Program. He is also lead scientist and a principal investigator for the DOE Atmospheric Science Program’s Megacity Aerosol Experiment – Mexico City (MAX-Mex) that was part of a collaborative Megacity Initiative – Local and Global Change Research Observations (MILAGRO) major field study. That study involves DOE, the National Science Foundation, NASA, and Mexican scientists.

Marley, who serves as a research associate professor in the Graduate Institute of Technology, is the assistant chief scientist of the MAX-Mex project. The DOE said her research addressed important scientific questions related to the effects of energy-related emissions on air quality and other components of the environment.

“Your astute guidance and wise mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students has led them to pursue careers in environmental research. Your contributions to science and training of students are highly commendable and greatly appreciated,” said Raymond L. Ohrback, undersecretary of Science.
