Anthro Prof, Student Dig Ancient Yemen Site

Dr. Krista Lewis, assistant professor of anthropology in UALR’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and anthropology student Elizabeth Sanders of Hot Springs, are creating a three-dimensional map and making a controlled surface collection in the ancient city of Maryah in what is now Yemen.

“Maryah was a major ancient kingdom that was larger than modern day Yemen,” Lewis said. “Its citizens built monumental dams, irrigation systems, and even stone high rises.”

Sanders returned with photos of the site as well as the people of the area. Lewis is expected back in mid-August. For more information, contact Lewis at kxlewis@ualr.edu.
