Just because a document doesn't print doesn't
mean there is a serious problem. Most of the printing problems
in the Writing Center are corrected easily via software.
The most commonly mistake made is overloading
the printer's cache/memory. When the printer receives multiple
print jobs at one time, it times out for an unpredicatable amount
of time. Once it loads the jobs into its cache, it concentrates
on emptying it; thus, printing the oldest document in its current
memory source.
An overload of documents is usually due to the
same document being subject to print more than necessary. Here's
how to check, fix, and avoid this common problem:
Sometimes the documents in the print tray are meant to be printed,
but they're too lengthy to print at the present time, or are not
top priority. In this case, simply select the document(s) that
aren't top priority at the time, and all but the last of the above
steps. Instead of purging the print job(s), simply Pause Documents
or Pause Printing. This will allow the jobs that aren't
top priority to print. *Make sure to unpause the paused jobs once
the others have printed.
The best way to avoid the above problem is to tell the people
that use the computers to only print once. Commanding a program
to print more than necessary will not make the printing of a document
more rapid.
The next step in determining what the printer problem maybe is
to make sure the Laserwriter 640's (printer) paper tray has paper,
and is locked in place. Occassionally, the paper tray in the 640
is not pushed nor locked down after paper is loaded. Slide the
paper tray out when the printer is not printing, and push down
the tray slowly. Once done, slide the paper tray back into place.
The ready light should appear upon completion.
The printers should blink remotely after a paper jam, but this
is cannot be guaranteed. Paper jams are to be handled accurately
to prevent damage to the printer. Therefore, it is best to contact
a staff member who has experience removing jammed paper from the
printer's head to counter the situation. It is advised that experienced
staff members demonstrate to other staff how to fix paper jams.
If there is no other staff member available to help, print from
a different printer.
Each row/table of computers has a designated printer. If a writer
wants or needs to print from the other printer, be sure to switch
the program's default printer back to its original afterward.
This is usually done within the remote program by selecting the
File pull-down menu, and then Print. The current
printer should be shown at the top of the print window, within
a pull-down menu.
What if one or both of the printers isn't to be found? In this
case, the computer does not see one or both of the printers. You
can make it see by automatically finding the printer within the
chooser.
