Religious Studies Goals and Objectives

Goal A

The student will become familiar with the basic approach to and some conceptual tools utilized in the academic study of religion.

Blue Ribbon competencies: Social and Cultural Awareness, Ethical and Moral Consciousness, Critical Thinking, Verbal Literacy

Objectives

  1. The student should be able to discriminate between the academic study of religion and the approach to religious study (e.g., Bible Study or Theology) characteristic of a committed participant within a particular religious worldview.
  2. The student should be able to identify some central categories utilized to organize data from the worldâs religions (ritual, myth, experience, social institution, ethical, doctrine).

Goal B

The student will become familiar with the distinctive nature of particular religious worldviews (e.g., Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).

Blue Ribbon competencies: Social/Cultural Awareness, International Awareness, Historical Awareness, Ethical and Moral Consciousness , Critical Thinking, Verbal Literacy

Objectives

  1. The student should be able to identify the meaning of concepts and practices central to each world religion.
  2. The student should be able to draw connections between the various aspects of a particular religious worldview in order to demonstrate their interrelatedness.
  3. The student should be able to accurately characterize the way religious traditions evolve historically.

Goal C

Students will learn the way in which religious worldviews supply meaning and practical direction to their adherents

Objective

  1. The student should be able to recognize the way religion may shape aspects of oneâs personal identity such as gender, race, class, and ethnicity.
