International Celebration Week, 2009: November 16-20

UALR has broadened the scope of its annual International Celebration Day to include a week filled with activities designed to enhance inter-cultural awareness and understanding. Please join us in celebrating the wonderful diversity of cultures, ideas, music, food and traditions both around the world and on our campus! These events serve to celebrate national International Education Week, as described in this proclamation by Governor Beebe.

International Film Day

International Celebration Week festivities will begin on Monday, November 16th with our International Film Day. Various international films will be shown on Monday in DSC Room 205 G (Trojan Alley), and will run from 9:00 am–5:00 pm. Admission is free. Film titles and times are as follows:
- 9:00 am: “Pelíšky” (”Cozy Dens”)–Czech film
- 11:00 am: “Bajo la Misma Luna” (”Under the Same Moon”)–Mexican film
- 1:00 pm: “Der Himmel über Berlin ” (The Sky Over Berlin/Wings of Desire)–German film
- 3:15 pm: “功夫” (”Kung Fu Hustle”)–film from Hong Kong
International Celebration Day
The ‘main event’ is scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center meeting rooms A-C. This is an exciting celebration of world-wide cultures featuring music, interactive displays, posters, and food. International Celebration Day is a free and public event that brings the world to UALR by providing international education and experiences for the campus and the community.

UALR Intercultural Communication (SPCH 4312) students will present posters on communicating across cultures including Rwanda, China, India, Mexico, Romania, Saudi Arabia, France, Pakistan and Russia. Representatives of Heifer International, International Friendship Outreach, and WinRock international, as well as wide array of campus and student organizations, will distribute information and discuss career and volunteer opportunities across the world.

This year, seventeen UALR student groups representing different countries and cultures will set up tables during International Celebration Day, many of them featuring food and traditional attire from their home countries. The UALR Programs Abroad Office will be present to provide information about international exchange programs and other programs abroad. Various groups will be performing throughout the day, representing a number of different cultures and musical traditions. The official line-up of performances is as follows:
- 10:30 am: Indian Percussion Ensemble
- 11:00 am: Traditional music from Iraq
- 11:30 am: Spanish Guitar
- 12:00 pm: Murat Al and friends–Turkish folk ensemble
- 12:25 pm: Megha Gupta–dance from India
- 12:30 pm: Dances from Rwanda
- 1:00 pm: To be announced
Panel discussion–”Afghanistan: Obama’s War?”

A panel discussion entitled “Afghanistan: Obama’s War?” will occur on Wednesday, November 18th from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the DSC Leadership Lounge–Room 201 I. This lively debate will feature UALR faculty, as well as other participants who work with or are from the international community. Panelists include:
- Dr. Andrew Drummond–UALR, Comparative Politics
- Dr. Joseph Giammo–UALR, Domestic Politics
- Dr. Rebecca Glazier–UALR, International Relations and U.S. Foreign Policy
- Dr. Walter Nunn
- Ms. Sophia Said–Pakistani Master’s Student, Clinton School of Public Service
Dr. Jacek Lubecki will act as panel moderator of this discussion concerning the domestic and international politics of the current military action in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
International Thanksgiving Celebration

On Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm, UALR is hosting an International Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner will take place in Donaghey Student Center Meeting Rooms A, B and C (Ledbetter Hall), and will feature food that is traditional in U.S. Thanksgiving celebrations. This free event is open to the campus, though a reservation is necessary to attend. To make a reservation for this event, please contact Colin Stanton at wcstanton@ualr.edu, or 501-569-3308.
Interfaith Dialogue Lunch

To conclude our week-long festivities, UALR is holding its third annual Interfaith dialogue lunch on Friday, November 20th from noon to 1.30 pm in DSC meeting room 205 G. The lunch is designed to promote discussion and greater understanding about how faith and culture affect our lives. The format will be informal, consisting of 4 students of various backgrounds and faiths sharing a meal and discussion at each table. This even is free for students, and lunch will be provided. We only have room for 40 participants, so please apply early. To encourage diversity at each table, please fill out the following application, and submit it via email to: hxbinder@ualr.edu. The form can also be printed out and delivered to the Office of International Services in Stabler Hall 105. Please submit all applications by Friday, Nov. 13th–we will send an email notifying you whether or not there is still room at the event.
