FYE: Costa Rica - One Participant’s Story

This program was part of a student success grant initiative to incorporate a short-term travel experience into the semester-long FYE course. One Participant’s Story

by Christopher Dunbar (Freshman, FYE: Costa Rica Student)

    The People
Walking down the cobble stone streets of San Jose, my first observation was of the trash and smell as rain water rolled between the stones under by my feet. As I walked, however, I saw a man sitting on the side of the road working on something; I did not want to draw attention to myself, so I passed quickly and did not make eye contact. However, on my way back down the street, I noticed that the man was painting pictures. With my 2 years of studying Spanish and his limited knowledge of English, I was able to spend my first night in Costa Rica talking with this man who painted pictures on the street about his paintings. It was a wonderful experience to be able to practice Spanish and interact with this person. He was friendly and I purchased a painting from him.

Interacting with the local people, including kids at a school in the village of Tortuguero, I found that their way of life was very different from mine. They did not seem to care about the rain or water – it was normal to walk to work – rain or no rain – it was an accepted way of living. The kids from the school traveled there by boat and trudged through water to come to their one room classroom to learn. They were friendly and happy and did not see it as a struggle like many of our group members did.

    The Beach
This experience was the first time that I have seen, sat on, and enjoyed the beach and ocean. It was surreal – just like I have seen in the movies. I buried my legs in the sand and swam in the ocean. Sitting on the beach was also a time of reflection and sharing thoughts with a good friend I made from our group. It was awesome!

    The Lesson
Anyone who travels abroad grows in a certain way inside. Being faced with challenges and new experiences, I felt older and more mature when I returned. The social interaction of a group of 15 students for 10 days forced me into an intense social interaction and a quick process of getting to know people. This was a most diverse group of people imaginable. I want to travel back to Latin America and spend more time interacting with locals and learning the more about the language and culture.

Donate $10 Campaign: Progress Update

The Donate $10 Campaign raised $1000. during Fall 2011. The funds were awarded to 11 UALR students who applied for the short-term study abroad scholarship. Donations are always accepted and will continue to be used to support our students.

As part of our mission, Programs Abroad, in partnership with various units of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, strives to provide support and services to the programs abroad community of students, faculty, staff and parents. This Fall semester we have taken on the intiative to increase the number of scholarships and financial assistance we can provide to encourage study abroad at multiple levels.

DONATE - designate your gift to Study Abroad!

The Goal of the Donate $10 Campaign

GlobeThe goal of the Donate $10 Campaign is for 100 people to donate at least $10 to the Study Abroad Foundation Account by the end of the 2011 Fall Semester. The name of each person who donates will be added to the wall in the study abroad office to recognize their support of study abroad. Contributions will be used to decrease the student cost of UALR Study Abroad Programs.

Why Should I Support Study Abroad?

Studying abroad has been shown to increase retention rates, enhance academic learning, encourage independence and adaptability, influence students’ career paths and marketability in the job market, & much more. UALR has a nontraditional student population where many individuals work, have families, and/or have never traveled outside of Arkansas. It is time to help students push past their boundaries by giving them the opportunity to explore a different part of the world from an academic prospective.

How do I Contribute

To donate go to: https://donations.ualr.edu and designate your gift to Study Abroad. Please send an email to studyabroad@ualr.edu to let me know you have made a contribution so I can add your name to our wall!

Updates about our progress will be posted on the ualr.edu/programsabroad website. Thank you for considering Programs Abroad!

US-Taiwan Ambassador Scholarship Program

TUSAThe TUSA Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program is being offered again this year to U.S. college and university students who are interested in studying the Mandarin Chinese language during the months of July and August.

UALR Students have received this award for many years. Three UALR students participated in the TUSA (Taiwan-US Alliance Program) this past Summer 2011. You can read about the experience from a student’s perspective on the Horizon’s Blog. The scholarship covers tuition, dormitory fees, four excursions and incidental insurance. Meals are not included and students must provide their own airfare to and from Taiwan.

In addition to studying at a first-rate university, students learn about Taiwanese culture and will visit several interesting sites to become more familiar with Taiwan and her people. The program has been created with special focus on students without Chinese/Taiwanese heritage, so prior knowledge or experience with the Mandarin language is not needed. Each U.S. student is paired with a Taiwanese study partner to assist in the language and cultural study program.

Students are encouraged to apply for Summer 2012! The application period is 1 January 2012 to 31 March 2012. Completed applications received prior to 15 February 2012 will be reviewed for early acceptance and reported to the applicant within seven days of that date. All remaining applications, including those not awarded early admission, will be reviewed and reported by 7 April 2012. Please visit: www.taiwanusalliance.com.
