UALR Student Receives Gilman and Freeman Asia Scholarship

Chris Cone
Congratulations to Christopher Cone who received a Benjamin Gilman Scholarship and a Freeman Asia Scholarship to apply towards his UALR Study Abroad Exchange Program in Chengdu, China.

Chris just completed his sophomore year at UALR. He is a Media Production major with a minor in International Studies. Chris began his studies of Mandarin at UALR and plans to continue his study of the language at our exchange partner, Sichuan University, in China during the 2011/2012 academic year.

Travel Blog and Photo Competition

The Office of International Services and Programs Abroad will be hosting our second Travel Blog and Photo Competition. The purpose of the competition is to encourage UALR students to share their study abroad experiences with the UALR Campus and Community. Approved entries will be posted on the Programs Abroad Horizons Blog: http://www.ualr.edu/horizons/

Categories

  • Overall best Travel Blog: evaluation will be based on creativity, photos, description of experiences, comparison of cultures, and ability to hold interest.
  • Overall best Travel Photo: evaluation will be based on the photo that tells the best story, creativity, uniqueness.

Winners will be chosen based on votes submitted by the campus community. After all entries have been submitted, you can vote for your favorite Blog and Photo once the entries are posted online (further details on voting to follow).

Prizes

  • First Place Winner: $50 Gift Certificate to Barns and Noble and a UALR Hoodie
  • Second Place Winner: $30 Gift Certificate to Barns and Noble and a USB Flash Drive
  • Third Place Winner: $20 Gift Certificate to Barns and Noble and A UALR Travel Mug

Entry Deadline

Blogs and Photos must be submitted to amjones5@ualr.edu by August 19st, 2011. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, September 7th at the second Study Abroad Alumni Event to be held in DSC G.

Eligibility

UALR Students may submit travel blogs from Spring 2011 and Summer 2011.

Get involved in International Celebration Week, 2011: November 14-18

International Celebration

UALR has broadened the scope of its annual International Celebration Day to include a week filled with activities designed to enhance inter-cultural awareness and understanding. The Event is celebrating the wonderful diversity of cultures, ideas, music, food and traditions both around the world and on our campus! These events serve to celebrate national International Education Week, as described in proclamation by Governor Beebe.

Volunteers are Needed

The event is designed to include student, staff, and faculty volunteers and participants. If you are interested in getting involved, we need help in the following areas:

  • Set-Up and Take-Down Volunteers
  • Table Volunteers
  • Decoration and Event Information Distribution
  • Performers: Share a talent that represents your home country or heritage
