Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara—Guadalajara, Mexico

Founded in 1936, Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara is the oldest private University in Mexico. As the capital city of the Mexican state of Jalisco, Guadalajara balances a rich cultural heritage with the diversity, events and activities associated with its status as a modern and productive metropolis. While in Guadalajara, UALR students engage in intensive Spanish language study at “Centro Internacional de Idiomas”, the International Language Center within UAG. The program has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to study Spanish in a context where they will have an occasion to use it on a daily basis. In addition, the program seeks to develop students’ understanding of culture through a combination of classroom and field experiences, drawing on local resources to enhance the learning process. A further goal of the program is to increase students’ awareness of local customs and lifestyles by housing them with native host families. Students can get credit toward an undergraduate or graduate degree while studying abroad for a summer, a semester, or a year. UALR’s Office of Programs Abroad can help students realize their dreams of learning and living in another country while working toward a degree. More information can be found on UAG’s website.

Courses involve both classroom instruction and activities outside the classroom intended to facilitate the acquisition of language skills, with emphasis on conversation and culture. Students may be eligible to apply for aid through the Financial Aid Office of the home institution. The Office of Programs Abroad determines eligibility and admission to the program. A minimum of six semester hours of language credit and a GPA of 2.5 is required for program admission.
