New State Task Force Will Address Alzheimer’s Epidemic

Broyles, Legislators to Discuss Bill

Little Rock – On Monday, December 8 at 3 p.m., University of Arkansas legend Frank Broyles, District 27 Representative Dawn Creekmore and Senator Barbara Horn will speak about new legislation that would create a government-mandated task force to address the impending challenges of Alzheimer’s disease in the state.  The event will be in the Old Supreme Court room on the second floor of the State Capitol building.

Approximately 100,000 Arkansans currently suffer from Alzheimer’s, a number that will increase dramatically over the next two decades as the baby boomer generation ages.  The escalating epidemic of the disease, which is the sixth-leading cause in America, promises to be a significant burden on the state’s health care industry.

Rep. Creekmore and Sen. Horn have submitted the bill for the spring legislative session. The task force’s purpose would be to identify the state’s current resources to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s while creating a readiness plan for the overwhelming growth.  The Alzheimer’s Association has worked with the authors and supports the bill.

“We applaud the leadership of Rep. Creekmore, Sen. Horn and Coach Broyles for their proactive efforts in creating the Task Force,” said Marisha DiCarlo, Assistant State Director for the Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter.  “The impact of Alzheimer’s on our state will crush the health care system as it is right now and, with their direction, we will have a readiness plan.”

Broyles lost his wife, Barbara, to Alzheimer’s disease and has dedicated much of his time to the fight against Alzheimer’s.  As an Alzheimer’s Association Champion, Broyles speaks out about the reality of the disease and the need for quality care for those with dementia.

Creekmore is the author of the House bill, which is co-sponsored by Rep. Butch Wilkins, Rep. Fred Allen and Rep. Mike Burris.  The Alzheimer’s Association expects additional co-sponsors in the House and Senate.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2008 Facts & Figures, Arkansas caregivers provide over 95 million hours of unpaid annual care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s.  These efforts have a market value of more than $1 billion every year.

SVPE Seminars Scheduled with SCAT

On the 5th, 19th and 26th of November, the Senior Justice Center will be presenting Sexual Violence Prevention Education to members at three senior centers in central Arkansas.  The location for these dates will be announced here shortly

Recently, the local organization, SCAT, had called the Center in hopes that we could present the elderly with information to help them understand why seniors are victimized so often.  The SCAT representative who is organizing this seminar series indicated that she personally knows of instances where seniors in Arkansas have been the target of scams, con-artists and other increasingly familiar crimes.

The seminars are penciled to begin at 10:30a and run about 1 hour.  The topics covered will mostly include Sexual Violence Prevention Education, however the overall topic of why seniors are victimized so frequently will be touched on as well during the scheduled sessions.

It is our goal to schedule additional seminars with SCAT at local senior centers so that the topics covered can be broadened and tailored to each groups’ needs and desires.

For a list of all seminars the Senior Justice Center offers, please visit our page devoted to Seminars.

Assisting Victims Through Crisis and Trauma Conference

Office for Victims of Crimes Logo

Recently, the Office for Victims of Crime sponsored the UALR Senior Justice Center to send Director, Dr. David Montague, and manager, Sam Johnston, to the Assisting Victims Through Crisis and Trauma Conference presented by The United States Attorneys’ Victim-Witness Programs for the Middle, Northern, and Southern Districts of Georgia.  The Senior Justice Center won a $1000 OVC training scholarship at a raffle held during a training earlier this year.  This one-day conference was held on the 18th of September at the Richard Russell Building in Atlanta, GA.  Featured speakers included Ed Jacobs, PhD and Brian Ogawa, PhD.  Dr. Ogawa presented a very exciting therapy used in assisting victims through traumatic experiences in life; Morita Therapy.  Named for Japan’s pioneering psychoanalyst Shoma Morita, MD–a contemporary of celebrated Western psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud–this engaging therapy pulls many concepts from nature in order to restore peace to the traumatized.  Dr. Ogawa discussed how the therapy is more like a way of life, with many practitioners in the East referring to the method as Morita-do; familiar to us through words like Taekwondo, aikido, and judo.  This ’suffix’ signifies how incorporating certain disciplines into daily life often provides enrichment and fulfillment to those who practice.  For more on Dr. Brian Ogawa, Morita therapy, or to read about the other distinguished speakers who presented at the Assisting Victims Through Crisis and Trauma conference, email manager Sam Johnston (smjohnston@ualr.edu), or navigate to our Articles of Interest section for copies of selected handouts from the conference (available soon).

Senior Justice Volunteers for AETN Fundraiser

When it comes to television, the channels for education are somewhat limited in Arkansas (unless a costly package is purchased from your cable/satellite provider).

AETN is one of our most treasured channels, partly due to its method of operation.  AETN provides educational shows for residents in Arkansas; NOVA, music showcases, and many other special topic shows are broadcasted for our enjoyment and benefit.  However, AETN is operated by viewer donations, and without patrons giving money to the station, viewers lose many valuable options for the station to ‘purchase’ and then broadcast for us to watch.

Twice a year, AETN holds a fundraising pledge-drive.  The Senior Justice Center has volunteered to work the phones at these drives in the past, and again when it was time for the Fall Pledge Drive this September, we were eager to show support for AETN.

On the 14th of September, Senior Justice interns Nora Cummings, Kim Woodward, and Amanda Wherry-Carter came to help AETN raise pledges.

In addition to our interns, Sandy Hanson (Online Coordinator/Student Advisor) of the UALR Criminal Justice department was kind enough to work the phones with us alongside Senior Justice Center Director, Dr. David Montague

Kyle Mays and Senior Justice Center Office Manager, Sam Johnston also assisted with AETN’s semi-annual Viewer Pledge Drive.

We would like to thank AETN for giving the chance to be involved with their volunteer opportunities!

On the 11th and 16th of September, the Senior Justice Center presented to the Jacksonville Senior Center about Sexual Violence Prevention and Education geared toward seniors, family members and caregivers.

We would kindly like to thank the people at the Jacksonville Senior Center for the opportunity to meet and work with the great crowd we encountered there.
