Standard or Silly?  The Measure of Things (Math)

Mattie Baker

Standard or Silly is a mathematical unit for gifted kindergarten students that focuses on the concepts related to measurement. Students will learn why we measure, different attributes that can be measured, the importance of accuracy in measurement, and various units and tools of measurement that are both standard and non-standard. The unit progresses through the skills of identifying and differentiating two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects, measuring length, width, height, perimeter, area, volume, and capacity, making estimations, and building models. Students will also learn to measure weight, time, and temperature. Using exciting literature and engaging hands-on activities Standard or Silly teaches students foundational math skills of measurement while incorporating critical thinking, problem solving, process skill development, and communication opportunities. Now, let’s measure!
