Online Degree Plan

MSW students who are enrolled in the online program will complete their MSW in three years. In addition to completing online coursework via Blackboard on their own time, students enrolled in online classes will meet for synchronous sessions (via Adobe Connect) on five specified dates throughout the semester.* Students can expect each synchronous session to last anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours.

First Year

Fall Semester

First year online MSW students will take Human Behavior in the Social Environment (SOWK 7330). Synchronous sessions for this course will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth week of classes on Monday evening. Students will also be enrolled in Social Welfare Policies and Services (SOWK 7350). Synchronous sessions for Policy will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteen weeks of the semester on a Thursday evening.

Spring Semester

First year online MSW students will be enrolled in Foundations III (SOWK 7331) and Social Work Research Methods (SOWK 7370). Synchronous courses for Foundations III will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Monday evening. Synchronous courses for Research Methods will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Thursday evening.

Second Year

Fall Semester

Second year online MSW students will take Diversity and Oppression (SOWK 7390). Synchronous sessions for this course will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth week of classes on Monday evening. Students will also be enrolled in Foundations I (SOWK 7301). Synchronous sessions for Foundations I will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteen weeks of the semester on a Thursday evening.

Spring Semester

Second year online MSW students will be enrolled in Assessment and Differential Diagnosis (SOWK 7391) and Foundations II (SOWK 7302). Synchronous courses for Assessment will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Monday evening. Synchronous courses for Foundations II will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Thursday evening.

Third Year

Synchronous sessions for this course will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth week of classes on Monday evening. Students will also be enrolled in Statistics (SOWK 8371). Synchronous sessions for Statistics will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteen weeks of the semester on a Thursday evening.

Spring Semester

Third year online MSW students will be enrolled in Advanced Direct Practice II (SOWK 8302) and Advanced Direct Practice III (SOWK 8390). Synchronous courses for ADP II will occur on the first, third, seventh, eleventh, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Monday evening. Synchronous courses for ADP III will occur on the first, fourth, eighth, twelfth, and fifteenth weeks of the semester on Thursday evening.

Electives

Online students also need to complete two electives (totaling six hours). At least one of these electives may only be taken after foundation year coursework is done. For part-time online students, this means that one elective must be taken after the second year of the program is completed.

Internships

In the second year of the MSW online program, students must be enrolled in an internship with a field placement.  Students must be physically present at their internship location; this portion of the MSW cannot be completed online. Second year students have the option to enroll in the internship for the fall/spring semesters, requiring students to be present two days per week at their internship location. Students also have the option to enroll in a summer block internship, which requires five days of physical presence per week at the internship site location.

Third year students must enroll in their internship concurrently with their coursework. Thus the third year internship must be completed in the fall and spring semesters, requiring three days per week of physical presence at the internship location.

Whether taken during the fall/spring or summer block, internships will require students to spend weekday hours at their internship site. Students should not expect to complete internships on an exclusive evening or weekend basis.
