Barnabas House Monster Dash 5K event scheduled Oct. 12

Halloween enthusiasts and 5K fans should mark their calendars for the Barnabas House Monster Dash, set to begin at 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Parking Lot 13, near the Jack Stephens Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

All proceeds from the event supports the mission of the Barnabas House, located at 2423 S. Tyler St., in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Little Rock. Runners and walkers of all ages are encouraged to get into the Halloween spirit by dressing up in their favorite costume.

The Barnabas House serves as a social work and counseling center where UALR students and other volunteers join social workers and medical professionals to advocate for the uninsured and working poor.

Clients of the Barnabas House have received help with housing, job placement, educational opportunities, disability determination and nutritional assistance, among many other quality-of-life services. Volunteer services have also included arranging surgeries and life-saving treatments, according to event organizers.

The Barnabas House is a mission of Oak Forest United Methodist Church, located near the UALR campus, as well as other area churches and schools.

The Bachelor of Social Work Student Organization (BSWSO), a student run organization comprised of students admitted to the BSW program, has endorsed the Monster Dash 5K. Dr. Mark Krain serves as the organization’s faculty advisor.
