Helix server retires this fall

At the end of the Fall semester, the Helix server will be retired. Links to Real Media (.rm and .ram) audio and video (AV) files will no longer be available in your courses starting in Spring 2012. These files must be encoded and transferred to our new streaming Media Server.

The Media Server will provide new features, additional space, and more stability for your content. The move provides us with great opportunities to:

  • Update to a new server and transfer AV files
  • Reduce course file size
  • Convert files to the standard MP4/MP3 format
  • Provide an accessible media player for AV content
  • Move toward iPhone, iPod, and iPad streaming content

Course Management and Email Notification

As course managers of your content, you’ll want to review your AV files early. This will help you organize and reduce the file size in your Blackboard Learn 9.1 course. To begin, look for opportunities to remove old student presentations, out-dated content, and file duplications.

In the days ahead, you will receive an email with more information about your course and a list of files that will need to be converted to MP4/MP3 format and transferred to the Media Server. “How to” tutorials are available to help you link your files. We look forward to assisting you. For more information contact Merlene Love@ualr.edu, or call 569.8954.
