Newsletter: Fall 2011

October is a time of transition, and as the campus prepares for the end of the fall semester, we at the STaR office are preparing for some transitions of our own.

In this newsletter, we take a look at our migration from Blackboard Campus Edition 8 to Blackboard Learn 9.1, as well as the retirement of the Helix video server and chat client Blackboard IM (formerly Pronto).

We also take a look back to congratulate this year’s Quality Matters recipients, and discuss best practices with Professor of Music Linda Holzer.

As always, we encourage your feedback and look forward to providing online faculty with support and training to support their online courses.

Prepare for migration with our fall workshops

Though the May deadline for migrating to Blackboard Learn 9.1 is just around the corner, there’s still plenty of time to prepare your courses for the new system!

If you’d like to teach on blackboard 9.1 next spring, or if you’d like to get a head start on developing for next summer or fall, check out your options on the STaR web site!

If you’re not quite ready to migrate, be sure and attend our weekly Learning Shorts webinar. Every Tuesday, we’ll give you a quick look at the new tools and functionality in Blackboard 9.1. Check out the Learning Shorts archive for past installments and more info.

Helix server retires this fall

At the end of the Fall semester, the Helix server will be retired. Links to Real Media (.rm and .ram) audio and video files will no longer be available in your courses starting in Spring 2012. These files must be encoded and transferred to our new streaming Media Server.

Read more about the retirement of the Helix server, or find out what you can do to prepare if your videos are part of the migration on our web site.

Blackboard IM to be phased out this fall

As part of the migration to Blackboard Learn 9.1, UALR will retire Blackboard IM, the stand-alone instant messaging software formerly known as Pronto, at the end of the fall semester.

Read more about your options on the STaR web site.
