Using Collaborate Mobile

Tech savvy students who use mobile devices can now use Blackboard Collaborate conferencing via their iPad, iPod, and iPhone. Students will first need to download the Blackboard Collaborate mobile web conferencing app from the Apple App Store and install it on their device.  Moderators will need to join the session from a desktop or laptop computer

When students join a Blackboard Collaborate session from Bb Learn, email, calendar link, or URL they will be able to:

  • View the Whiteboard
  • View a shared application on another user’s desktop
  • Send and receive public Chat messages
  • Listen and speak to others in Breakout Rooms
  • Respond to Polls

However, unlike using a desktop or laptop, not all web conferencing features are currently supported on mobile devices, these include:

  • Private Chat
  • Live Video
  • File Transfer
  • Multimedia Library Viewing
  • Whiteboard Annotation Options
  • Moderator Controls
  • Recording Playback

Moderators can see what mobile devices students are using in the participants list and will need to provide an alternative solution for these users to access content.  Also, Web Tour is not available for mobile users. Moderators may choose to publish the URL into the Chat box so that students can take the tour at another time. If students access the tour from their devices, they will be removed from Collaborate within two minutes. Additionally, moderators will need to “place” or “transfer” mobile users from room to room.
