Moderator Best Practices for Collaborate

Collaborate is a robust web-conferencing tool that can be useful for synchronous activities such as live lectures, presentations and study sessions.  Effectively moderating a session can be a challenge.  Here are some things you can do to make sure your session is a success:

  • Review the Overview for Moderators prior to holding your first session so that you are familiar with the basic functionality.

  • Ask a colleague to join you ahead of time to practice using the tools and moderating a session.

  • Make sure students are prepared by sending them resources before the session, such as the Participant Orientation and the First Time User Configuration.

  • During the session, start off with a slide indicating how to configure audio and video for students.

  • Throughout the session make use of the interactive tools, such as the whiteboard and instant polling, to keep students engaged.
