Chunking Your Course

To help in the process of course design, think of your course in parts or "chunks." Some faculty chunk their courses by the week, some by the topic; others chunk by a single chapter or the groups of chapters which contain concepts that go together.

module components: learning objective, assessment, scores and activities Each chunk or module has four interconnected parts:

  • a learning objective or rationale behind it
  • an assessment strategies based on the learning objective
  • learning activities and intereactivity that pull it all together
  • scores or grades that are tied to both learning objectives and assessment

Once you've chunked your course, be thinking about the learning objective, assessment methods, learning activities and points associated with each chunk. Some of your f2f course activities can be used or adapted for your online course. Be thinking of some ways use technology to include learner interaction with

  • content
  • each other
  • you
  • experts
  • the Web
  • multimedia
