Successful Transition to Employment for Postsecondary
Students (STEPS)
Welcome to STEPS! STEPS is a model demonstration project funded by the U.S.
Department of Education. It offers a comprehensive approach to providing
students who have accommodation needs the tools they need to become
professionally employed. STEPS bridges the gap between school and work,
providing students with skills, knowledge, and techniques to make this
transition successful. Through classes, workshops, and hands-on experience,
students with disabilities are assisted with ways to improve their resume
writing, interviewing, communication and leadership skills. Not only do
students gain this knowledge and experience, they also receive a stipend of
$150 upon completion of the STEPS program. Completion of the program takes a
minimum of one semester.
STEPS is under the Division of Student Development and Disability Support Services (DSS).

STEPS PRODUCTS
STEPS Brochure
- A brochure developed by the STEPS program which describes STEPS and two
other programs on the UALR campus: Disability Support Services (DSS) and
Postsecondary Educational Consortium (PEC).
Resume Assessment
Inventory (RAI) - A assessment instrument designed to measure the quality of
a typical resume. The RAI was developed following a review of the
resume writing literature and was field tested at UALR.
Essential Function
Worksheet (EFW) - The EFW is a form for potential employees and current
employees to use to help determine the essential functions of a job. Also,
this worksheet can be used by employers to determine the essential functions of a
job and to keep a job description current. The advantage of the EFW over
traditional job analysis is that the EFW is quick and easy to complete, uses
Federal regulations as a guideline, and is easy to understand.
- Rational for the EFW.
Photos of UALR - This file
has the photos of the UALR campus that we used in our brochure. The first
photo is of the access ramp into the University pool and the second photo is
one of our staff and a student standing in front of the student center or union.
