Dialup Modem: Requires a standard modem, included with most computers. Connects using a regular phone line and is the slowest type of Internet access.

DSL: Requires a special DSL modem which must be purchased through the Internet Service Provider. Connects using a regular phone line, but allows you to talk on the phone even while you're connected. This connection is much faster than a dialup connection.

Cable Modem: Requires a cable modem which must be purchased through the Internet Service Provider. Connects using the existing television cable in your house. This connection is much faster than both dialup and DSL.
