Personal Dress – Wear clothing appropriate to the season and weather – lightweight clothing in summer and warmer clothes in winter. Wear layers so you can adapt to varying conditions in your workspace and still be comfortable.

Walk – for those who get around campus walk when you can. Use the stairs in lieu of elevator. It is good exercise, and it does save energy.

Remember to hit the switch on your way out for your lunch break. The energy savings from 10 million office workers turning off unneeded lights for 30 minutes a day is enough to illuminate four million square meters of office space.

Close fume hoods and don’t use fume hoods for storage; don’t prop open classroom and vestibule doors.

You can’t sleep at work but let your monitor take a nap. Screensavers are designed to save your screen from burn in, not to save energy. Monitors are responsible for more than one third of a computer’s energy consumption, so conserve energy by putting yours to sleep or powering off altogether when you’re away from your desk for more than 10 minutes.

Use compact fluorescent lamps. You can lower your lighting bill by converting to energy-efficient low-wattage compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures.

Weather-strip around window and doors.

Fix defective plumbing or dripping faucets. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month. That not only increases water bills, but also increases the gas or electric bill for heating the water.

Set thermostats at 78 degrees F for cooling in the summer and 68 degrees F for heating in the winter; this will save 10-20 percent of cooling costs and 5-20 percent of heating costs.

Turn off lights when the room is not occupied.

Locate the recycling bins in your office, department and/or building to determine what types of materials are being accepted. UALR recycles all types of paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles from each building but each person consuming those types of materials must be responsible for sorting and disposing of in the correct recycling bin. The custodial staff cannot be responsible for sorting the waste coming from your desk, please do your part.

Other items such as printer cartridges, batteries, electronics, bulbs and other items purchased with state funds for the office are being recycled on your campus daily, please make sure that those items go back to the Physical Plant for proper disposal; call 569.3390 for information.

Buy post-consumer content recycled copy paper for the office.

Make your printer’s toner last; if you’re printing rough drafts or documents for internal purposes, change the printer’s settings to economy mode and avoid printing in color if possible. Print and copy on both sides of the sheet.

Remove yourself from junk mail lists. Before tossing out junk e-mail, call the company and ask that your name be removed from its mailing list. Have contacts e-mail you instead. Almost 50 percent of all catalogues are never opened, yet nearly 62 million trees are destroyed and 28 billion gallons of water are used to produce them every year.
