UALR Launches Farm2Work Online Farmers Market

The UALR Sustainability Committee and Sodexo Dining Services are excited to announce the launch of an online farmer’s market for the benefit of UALR students, staff, and faculty. The farmer’s market is available year-round, offering local meats, cheeses, and in-season produce.

Ordering is available once a week. Upon ordering, you have the option of picking up your order from Eggshells in the Heights or the Kitchen Company in west Little Rock or Farm2Work will deliver directly to your UALR office. The $25 enrollment fee is waived for the first two orders to allow you to give the program a test drive!

How it works: The growers list their products on Thursday evenings. Farm2Work opens the Market on Friday morning at 10:00 with an email to anyone who has created an account. On Monday morning, we send a reminder that the Market is open until 7:00p.m. When the market closes on Monday evening, we send a “Harvest Email” to the growers with a total count of the orders placed. Tuesday morning, they harvest, bake, and prepare for delivery to Little Rock where the orders are given to Farm2Work. On Wednesday morning, Farm2Work assembles the orders and delivers them to the designated drop off locations at UALR. We use a deep freezer, coolers and frozen cold packs to keep the meat frozen and the cheeses cooled. Many of our clients will leave an empty cooler in their office and we will place the order and some frozen ice packs and close the lid and pull the door closed!

Why buy local? Although there are many great reasons to buy locally, these are a few of the most popular:

  • Food travels an average of 1300 miles to your grocery store, usually from California, Florida, and Washington.
  • Fruits and vegetables spend an average of 7-14 DAYS in transit, but when you buy locally, your food was typically harvested within the last 24 hours.
  • Grocery stores choose food for durability, not for taste or nutrition.
  • When you know your farmer, you know your food.

Ready to order?

  1. Go to the Farm2Work website: http://www.farm2work.locallygrown.net
  2. Create an account.
  3. Go to the Market and shop!
  4. Check out. Once the order has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to a secure website where you will make your payment.
  5. We will deliver to you on Wednesday and call when we are on our way. Since your order has been prepaid, we can leave it with a co-worker if you are in a meeting! Just be sure to add special instructions in the “Comments” box before submitting.

Remember, your first two orders will waive the enrollment fee, so give it a try now!
